রাস্তা ও নির্দেশনা বলা

রাস্তা বলানো ইংরেজিতে আপনার প্রথম আসল কথোপকথনগুলোর একটি, আর এটি নিজস্ব ব্যাকরণ ব্যবহার করে: imperative।

Imperative

কর্তা বাদ দিন আর ক্রিয়ার মূল রূপ ব্যবহার করুন।

• Turn left at the lights.
• Go straight on.
• Don't take the first exit. (নেতিবাচক: don't + ক্রিয়া)

কোনো you নেই, আর কোনো to নেই। এটিই পুরো রূপ।

আপনিও যে অন্তর্ভুক্ত এমন একটি প্রস্তাবের জন্য let's ব্যবহার করুন: Let's take the bus. নেতিবাচক হলো Let's not walk — it's raining.

take the second right	ডান দিকে দ্বিতীয় মোড়
go past the bank	সেটি পেরিয়ে এগোতে থাকুন
go through the park	ভেতরে ঢুকে অন্য পাশ দিয়ে বের হন
go over / under the bridge	উপর দিয়ে / নিচ দিয়ে
go along / follow this road	এই রাস্তা ধরেই চলতে থাকুন
it's on your left	এটি সেই পাশে দেখতে পাবেন
opposite the station	তার সামনে, রাস্তার ওপারে
next to / between	পাশে / দুটি জিনিসের মাঝে
at the corner	যেখানে দুটি রাস্তা মেলে
at the end of the road	রাস্তার শেষ মাথায়
at the roundabout / crossroads	যেখানে রাস্তাগুলো মেলে

ধাপগুলো ক্রমে রাখা

রাস্তা বলানো একটি ক্রম, আর ইংরেজি সেই ক্রমটি জোর দিয়ে চিহ্নিত করে: first, then, after that, when you get to…, finally।

• First go straight on. Then take the second left. When you get to the church, turn right.

কত দূর তা বলা

• It's about two hundred metres.
• It's a five-minute walk. (কোনো বিশেষ্যের আগে একবচন minute-এ খেয়াল করুন)
• It's just around the corner. · It's a fair way — you're better off taking the bus.
• You can't miss it. (এটি স্পষ্ট দেখতে পাবেন — একটি খুব প্রচলিত শেষ লাইন)

জিজ্ঞেস করা

• Excuse me, how do I get to the station?
• Is there a pharmacy near here?
• Which way is the museum?
• Is it far? — About ten minutes on foot.

Excuse me দিয়ে শুরু করুন। এটি ছাড়া প্রশ্নটি হঠাৎ মনে হয়।

একটি নির্দেশ নরম করা

রাস্তা বলানোর জন্য একদম সাদামাটা imperative ঠিক আছে, কিন্তু কাউকে কিছু করতে বলার জন্য এটি একটি আদেশের মতো শোনাতে পারে। প্রয়োজনের হিসাবে স্তর বেছে নিন:

Send it today.	Please send it today.	Would you be able to send it today?

Just-ও নরম করে: Just go straight on.

একটি সমাধান করা উদাহরণ

Excuse me, how do I get to the library?

— Go straight on, take the second left, and it's on your right, opposite the school. It's about five minutes.

A: Excuse me, which way is the station?

B: Go past the post office, then follow the road round to the left.

B: Then left. Keep going and you'll see it on your right. You can't miss it.

Sorry, could you say that again? সেই বাক্যাংশ যা তৈরি রাখার যোগ্য — রাস্তা সাধারণত যতটা দ্রুত বোঝা যায় তার চেয়ে দ্রুত বলা হয়।
