셀 수 있는 것 — 셀 수 있고, 복수형이 있어요: a book / two books · an apple / three apples · a chair / chairs
셀 수 없는 것 — 복수형이 없고, a/an도 없어요: water, bread, rice, money, time, music, information, advice, luggage, work, homework, furniture
❌ I need an information. → ✅ I need some information. ❌ She gave me three advices. → ✅ She gave me some advice.
|---|---|
| a piece of | a piece of advice / information / furniture |
| a bit of | a bit of luck / work |
| a slice / loaf of | a slice of bread |
| a bottle / glass of | a glass of water |
| a bar of | a bar of chocolate |
| an item of | an item of clothing / luggage |
|---|---|
| I don't drink coffee. (음료 전반) | Two coffees, please.
| She has long hair. (머리카락 전반) | There are hairs in my soup.
| I need paper. (재료) | I bought a paper.
| We don't have time. (시간 전반) | I've been there three times.
| He has experience. (능력으로서의 경험) | It was a strange experience.
How much와 how many
- How many + 셀 수 있는 것: How many eggs do we need?
- How much + 셀 수 없는 것: How much milk is left?
Some과 any
- I have some money.
- Do you have any money?
- I don't have any money.
- Would you like some coffee?
- Could I have some water?
A lot of, much, many
a lot of books · a lot of time
I don't have much time. · Were there many people?
격식체 텍스트에서는 다시 적절해져요 — much of the report deals with…
A few와 a little
- a few + 셀 수 있는 것: a few friends
- a little + 셀 수 없는 것: a little sugar
|---|---|---|
| 없음 | no books / not any books | no time |
| 거의 없음 | few books, hardly any books | little time, hardly any time |
| 조금 | a few books | a little time |
| 적당히 | several books | some time |
| 많이 | many books, plenty of books | much time, plenty of time |
| 너무 많이 | too many books | too much time |
Too many와 too much는 "필요보다 많다"는 뜻이지, 그냥 "많다"가 아니에요. _There were too many people_은 불만이에요.
A: Could I have some water and a few napkins?
B: Of course. Anything to eat?
A: How many pastries are left? We don't have much time.
B: Only a few, I'm afraid. There's plenty of bread, though.
