Como falar sobre temas abstratos e desconhecidos

No nível B2 você já consegue falar do seu trabalho e da sua vida. O próximo passo são os temas para os quais você não se preparou: ética, tendências, hipóteses — o que os exames e as discussões reais colocam em pauta.

Tendências e mudanças

• There's been a growing tendency towards remote work.
• The number of applicants has risen sharply / fallen steadily.
• This is increasingly common.
• Attitudes have shifted considerably.

Pares úteis: rise / fall, increase / decrease, sharply / gradually / steadily.

Preste atenção à separação entre verbo e substantivo, onde muitos tropeçam: prices rose (verbo, sem complemento), mas a rise in prices (substantivo). E trend combina com towards: a trend towards shorter contracts.

Causa e consequência

• This has led to a shortage of housing.
• One consequence of this is...
• It's largely due to the cost of energy.
• This contributes to the problem, but isn't the only factor.
• The underlying cause is... · This is a symptom rather than a cause.

Hipóteses e suposições

• If governments were to act now, the effect would be significant.
• It's conceivable that prices will stabilise.
• That would depend on how quickly it's implemented.
• In theory, yes — in practice, it's harder.
• Suppose the funding disappeared — what then?

Argumentação equilibrada

Tanto examinadores quanto colegas de trabalho valorizam a ponderação mais do que a contundência.

• On the one hand... on the other hand...
• While there are clear benefits, there are also risks.
• It depends largely on the context.
• To some extent, yes, but...

Como generalizar sem correr riscos

Uma conversa abstrata exige afirmações sobre grupos, e afirmações absolutas são fáceis de refutar. Estas fórmulas permitem generalizar sem exagerar:

• On the whole, people prefer… · By and large, this holds.
• As a rule, smaller firms are more flexible.
• There are exceptions, but the pattern is clear.
• This is typically the case in urban areas.

Como estruturar uma resposta longa

Um tema não preparado fica mais fácil se o esquema for conhecido antes do conteúdo:

1. Marque o enquadramento. There are really two questions here — whether it works, and whether it's fair.
2. Assuma um posicionamento. On the practical side, the evidence is fairly strong…
3. Faça uma concessão. That said, it clearly places a burden on…
4. Conclua. On balance, I'd say…

Anunciar a estrutura ganha tempo para pensar e transforma uma resposta curta em algo ponderado, não em algo pobre.

A paráfrase: uma habilidade de sobrevivência

Nem sempre você terá a palavra exata à mão. Falantes fluentes descrevem o conceito ao redor da lacuna, em vez de parar.

• It's a kind of... — It's a kind of tax on imports.
• It's the thing you use to... — It's the thing you use to measure pressure.
• It's similar to X, but...
• I can't think of the word, but it's when...

Isso não é um fracasso. Hesitar e descrever é muito melhor do que ficar calado ou trocar de idioma.

Como ganhar tempo

• That's an interesting question.
• Let me think about that for a second.
• I suppose it depends on...

Falantes nativos usam isso o tempo todo. Soa natural, não evasivo.

Ninguém espera que você seja especialista no assunto. O examinador que pergunta sobre planejamento urbano não está avaliando seu conhecimento de planejamento urbano, mas outra coisa: sua capacidade de construir uma opinião, fazer uma concessão num ponto e formular uma hipótese em inglês. Dizer I don't know much about this, but I'd imagine… e continuar falando por um minuto é muito mais rentável do que um silêncio sincero.

Uma pergunta não preparada, resolvida com o esquema

A: Should city centres be closed to cars?

B: That's an interesting question. There are two things there, really — whether it works, and whether it's fair. On the whole, the cities that have tried it have seen air quality improve. That said, it clearly disadvantages people who can't easily use public transport. On balance I'd support it, if the alternatives were in place first.

Uma fórmula para ganhar tempo, um enquadramento, uma generalização segura, uma concessão e um posicionamento — e nem um grama de conhecimento especializado.
