Subject-Verb Agreement: Fiili Uydurmak
Hangi fiil biçimi hangi özneyle gider — öznenin fiilin yanında oturan kelime olmadığı zor durumlar dahil.
Temel kural basittir. Puanlar, öznenin göründüğünden daha zor bulunduğu durumlarda kaybedilir.
Temel kural
Tekil özne → tekil fiil. Çoğul özne → çoğul fiil.
- The dog barks. / The dogs bark.
- She has a car. / They have a car.
Tuhaflığa dikkat edin: present simple'da -s alan tekildir, isimlerin tam tersi.
Tuzak 1: özne ile fiil arasındaki kelimeler
Fiil özneyle uyuşur, en yakın duran isimle değil.
The box of chocolates is on the table. (kutu duruyor, çikolatalar değil)
The results of the survey were surprising. (sonuçlar şaşırtıcıydı)
Çözüm — özne ile fiil arasındaki her şeyi zihinsel olarak silin. The box … is. İşte uyum budur, ve aradaki ifade ne kadar uzarsa uzasın geçerlidir.
As well as, along with, together with, in addition to ile başlayan ifadeler de özneyi değiştirmez:
- ✅ The manager, as well as the assistants, is attending.
Tuzak 2: çoğul görünen sayılamayan isimler
News, information, advice, furniture, luggage, money, research İngilizcede tekildir.
❌ The news are bad. ✅ The news is bad.
❌ These informations are useful. ✅ This information is useful.
Mathematics, physics, economics, politics özneleri de -s'e rağmen aynı şekilde davranır: Physics is hard.
Ve tekil görünen ama olmayan iki tanesi
İki parçadan oluşan şeyler çoğul fiil alır: trousers, jeans, glasses, scissors.
- ✅ My glasses are on the desk. (onları tekil yapmak için a pair of glasses is gerekir)
Tuzak 3: each, every, everyone
Kaç kişi kastedilirse kastedilsin hepsi tekildir.
- Everyone is here. (are değil)
- Each of the students has a folder.
Aynısı somebody, nobody, anything, neither için de geçerlidir: Neither of them was available.
Tuzak 4: there is / there are
Fiil, kendisinden sonra gelenle uyuşur.
- There is a problem. / There are problems.
- Bir listeyle, ilk öğeyi izler: There is a table and four chairs.
Tuzak 5: and'e karşı or
- A and B → çoğul: Tom and Sara are coming.
- A or B → daha yakın olanla uyuşur: Either the manager or the assistants are coming.
Tuzak 6: topluluk isimleri
Team, family, company, government, staff, class, birkaç kişiden oluşan tek bir grubu tanımlar, ve İngilizce size seçim hakkı verir:

İngiliz İngilizcesi çoğulu Amerikan İngilizcesinden çok daha rahat kullanır. İkisi de savunulabilir — ama tek bir yazı içinde tutarlı kalın.
Tuzak 7: özne olarak bir eylem
Özne bir -ing biçimi veya bütün bir cümlecik olduğunda, tek bir şey sayılır, bu yüzden fiil tekildir.
- ✅ Reading books is relaxing. (books çoğul olsa bile are değil)
- ✅ What we need now is more time.
Tuzak 8: a number of / the number of
Bu ikisi birbirine benzer görünür ve zıt davranır.
- A number of students are waiting. ("birkaç" anlamına gelir → çoğul)
- The number of students is falling. (sayının kendisi → tekil)
A lot of, most of, half of, some of ile of'tan sonraki isim karar verir: Half of the cake is gone. / Half of the guests have left.
