There is ve there are: Var olanı söylemek

Bir şeyin var olduğunu söylemek için İngilizce sabit bir kalıp kullanır: there is veya there are. Buradaki there kelimesi bir yer anlamına gelmez. Sadece yapının bir parçasıdır.

Tekil ve çoğul

• There is + bir şey: There is a bank on this street.
• There are + birden fazla: There are two banks on this street.

Fiil, kendisinden sonra gelen şeyle uyuşur, there ile değil.

Türkçenin var ve yok'u burada bir tuzaktır: onlar sayıya göre değişmez — Bir sorun var ve İki sorun var'da aynı kelime kullanılır. İngilizce fiil, sayıyla değişir, ve bu değişimi atlamak en yaygın hatadır.

Sayılamaz isimler "is" alır

Water, bread, money, time, information ve music sayılamaz, bu yüzden her zaman is alır:

• There is milk in the fridge.
• There is a lot of traffic today.

Sorularda ve olumsuzlarda any, olumlu cümlelerde some kullanın: There are some chairs.

Miktar sormak için, önüne how many / how much koyun:

• How many people are there in your team?
• How much time is there before the train?

Geçmiş zaman

• There was a mistake in the bill.
• There were three people waiting.

Bir modal eklemek

Kalıp, will, might, should, used to'yu şekil değiştirmeden alır — fiil be olarak kalır.

• There will be a break at eleven.
• There might be a delay.
• There used to be a cinema here.

Konuşmada: there's

There's son derece yaygındır ve serbestçe kısaltılır. There're gerçekten kullanılmaz — konuşmacılar tam there are'ı söyler.

• ✅ There's someone at the door.
• ✅ There are two people at the door. ("there're" değil)

Yaygın hatalar

Türkçenin var/yok'u sayıya göre değişmediği için, en yaygın hata sayıyı görmezden gelip her yerde there is kullanmaktır.

❌ There is three rooms in the flat. ✅ There are three rooms in the flat.

Bazı diller burada have kullanır. İngilizce kullanmaz.

❌ Here have a supermarket. ✅ There is a supermarket here.

There is karşı it is — there is bir şeyi ilk kez tanıtır; it is zaten bilinen bir şey hakkında konuşur. There's a letter for you. It's from the bank.

Ve bir listeyle, fiil ilk öğeyi izler:

✅ There is a table and four chairs. ✅ There are four chairs and a table.

Nerede kullanılır

Bu kalıp, bir odayı, bir kasabayı, bir fotoğrafı veya bir sorunu tanımlama yolunuzdur — bu yüzden sınavlarda ve gerçek konuşmalarda sürekli karşınıza çıkar.

There is a small kitchen, and there are two windows. There isn't a lift, but there is a garden.

A: Is there a washing machine?

B: There is, yes. And there's a dishwasher, though there isn't much cupboard space.

A: How many bedrooms are there?

B: Two. There used to be three, but the last owner knocked a wall through.
