  • He went to hospital.(作为病人)对比 He went to the hospital.(去那栋建筑)
  • She's in prison.(正在服刑)对比 in the prison.(去监狱这个地方)
  • Life is difficult.(泛指人生)对比 The life he led was difficult.(特指他的人生)
  • I like the idea of it more than the reality.(由语境确定的特指)

  • I live in Berlin.(长期)/ I'm living in Berlin.(暂时,暗示会结束)
  • I've read the report.(已读完)/ I've been reading the report.(过程,可能尚未完成)
  • She's always losing her keys.(进行体 + always = 表达不满,而不是单纯的频率)

She's always losing her keys She always loses her keys 没有。

  • I was going to call you.(结果没打)/ I would have called you.(如果不是被别的事耽误的话)
  • He used to smoke.(陈述事实,已经结束)/ He would smoke on the balcony.(回忆中的画面,需要先有语境铺垫)

suggest I suggest waiting. I suggest (that) you wait.(但绝不说 suggest you to wait)
recommend I recommend reading it. I recommend that it be reviewed.(虚拟语气)
expect I expect to hear soon.(我自己) I expect you to hear soon.(你)
help It helps to write it down. It helps writing it down.(两种都对)

I gave the report to the new project manager 比 I gave to the new project manager the report.
I only spoke to him ≠ I spoke only to him。

  • It was the timing that killed it.
  • What I don't understand is why nobody flagged it.
  • Never have I seen anything like it.
  • Do sit down.(强调性的 do)

I didn't say that(是别人说的)· I didn't say that(我说的是别的)· I didn't say that(但也许我暗示过)。

  • Actually ——
  • In fact ——
  • Admittedly ——
  • Then again ——

  • about twenty, give or take · a couple of weeks
  • sort of the same thing · more or less finished
  • something like thirty per cent · -ish: at sixish

I have been working here since three years. I am living in Berlin. In my opinion, the project was very difficult because of the timing.

I've worked here about three years now. I live in Berlin — well, for the moment. It was the timing that made the project hard, really.
