Zero ও Mixed Conditionals: সেই দুটি যা কেউ শেখায় না

বেশিরভাগ কোর্স তিনটি conditional শিখিয়ে থেমে যায়। কিন্তু গোনা তিনটি তা সব ঢাকে না যা ইংরেজি আসলে if দিয়ে করে — দুটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ pattern এই তালিকার বাইরে বসে আছে।

Zero Conditional: সবসময় সত্য

If + present simple, present simple.

কোনো ভবিষ্যদ্বাণী নয় আর কোনো কল্পনা নয় — পৃথিবী কীভাবে কাজ করে তার একটি নিয়ম।

• If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
• If I don't sleep, I get headaches.
• If a customer complains, we refund them.

চেনার উপায় হল আপনি if-এর জায়গায় when বসাতে পারেন আর প্রায় কিছুই হারান না: When you heat water, it boils. এই বদল বাকি conditional-এর সঙ্গে কখনো কাজ করে না — "when I won the lottery, I'd buy a house" হাস্যকর।

Zero conditional সেটিই যা দফতরের ইংরেজিতে লেগেই দেখা যায় — নীতি, প্রক্রিয়া, প্রযুক্তিগত নথি। If the build fails, the pipeline stops. এটি জিনিস কীভাবে কাজ করে তার ব্যাকরণ।

First Conditional-এর তুলনায়

• If it rains, the ground gets wet. (zero — সবসময়, একটি সত্য)
• If it rains, I**'ll take** an umbrella. (first — এই নির্দিষ্ট উপলক্ষ)

Zero একটি সাধারণ সত্য বলে; first একটি ভবিষ্যৎ ঘটনার ভবিষ্যদ্বাণী করে।

Mixed Conditionals: দুটি আলাদা সময়

Third conditional দুটি অংশকেই অতীতে রাখে:

• If I had studied, I would have passed. (অতীতের শর্ত → অতীতের ফল)

কিন্তু প্রায়ই অতীতের একটি শর্তের ফল এখন হয়:

অতীতের শর্ত → বর্তমানের ফল

If + past perfect, would + মূল ক্রিয়া।

• If I had taken that job, I would be in Berlin now.
• If she hadn't missed the flight, she would be here.
• If we had booked earlier, we wouldn't be on the waiting list.

আফসোস অতীতে; ফল আপনার সামনে বসে আছে।

বর্তমানের শর্ত → অতীতের ফল

উল্টোটিও আছে, যদিও কম সাধারণ।

If + past simple, would have + past participle.

• If I were more organised, I wouldn't have missed the deadline.
• If he didn't hate flying, he would have come with us.

এখানে একটি স্থায়ী গুণ কোনো নির্দিষ্ট অতীতের ঘটনা ব্যাখ্যা করে।

পাঁচটি pattern এক নজরে

দুটি বিষয় যা ঠিক করা দরকার

If-অংশে কখনো will বসাবেন না। If it will rain ভুল; এটি if it rains। ব্যতিক্রম একটি ভদ্র বিনতি — If you will wait a moment — যেখানে will মানে "করতে রাজি"।

Second conditional-এ was নয়, were। If I were you তয় রূপ, আর were সতর্ক লেখায় প্রতিটি কর্তার জন্য মানক: if he were here। কথায় আপনি was শুনবেন, কিন্তু পরীক্ষা were আশা করে।

A: If I'd accepted that offer, I'd be living in Berlin now.

B: Would you though? If you were the type to move abroad, you'd have gone years ago.

A: True. If I get another chance, I'll think about it properly.

চার লাইনে তিনটি conditional — mixed, উল্টো দিকে mixed, তারপর first। কেউ তালিকা নিয়ে ভাবছে না; শুধু timeline-এর এটিই দরকার।
