چگونه راه را توضیح بدهیم و دستور بدهیم

توضیح دادن راه یکی از نخستین گفتگوهای واقعی به انگلیسی است و دستور زبان خودش را دارد: امر.

امر

فاعل حذف می‌شود و فقط فعل ساده می‌ماند.

• Turn left at the lights.
• Go straight on.
• Don't take the first exit. (منفی: don't + فعل)

نه you و نه to. تمام شکل همین است. فارسی‌زبان‌ها اینجا راحت‌اند: «برو»، «بپیچ»، «نرو» هم همین ساخت را دارند و فاعل در آن‌ها نمی‌آید. فقط یادتان باشد انگلیسی «بروید» و «برو» را جدا نمی‌کند — یک شکل برای هر دو است.

همین شکل چهار کار دیگر هم می‌کند

اگر جمله خود شما را هم شامل شود، let's لازم است: Let's take the bus. منفی‌اش — Let's not walk — it's raining.

چگونه مرحله‌ها را به ترتیب بچینیم

توضیح دادن راه یک توالی است و انگلیسی آن را بلند می‌گوید: first, then, after that, when you get to…, finally.

• First go straight on. Then take the second left. When you get to the church, turn right.

چگونه بگوییم دور است یا نه

• It's about two hundred metres.
• It's a five-minute walk. (پیش از اسم minute مفرد است — فارسی هم همین‌طور: «پنج‌دقیقه پیاده»)
• It's just around the corner. · It's a fair way — you're better off taking the bus.
• You can't miss it. («پیدایش می‌کنید» — جملهٔ پایانی بسیار رایج)

چگونه بپرسیم

• Excuse me, how do I get to the station?
• Is there a pharmacy near here?
• Which way is the museum?
• Is it far? — About ten minutes on foot.

با Excuse me شروع کنید. بدون آن پرسش تند به گوش می‌رسد.

چگونه دستور را نرم کنیم

برای راه، امر خالی عادی است، ولی وقتی از کسی می‌خواهید کاری بکند ممکن است مثل فرمان شنیده شود. سطح لازم را انتخاب کنید (فارسی «لطفاً» و «ممکنه …؟» را برای همین دارد):

Send it today.	Please send it today.	Would you be able to send it today?

Just هم نرم می‌کند: Just go straight on.

تحلیل یک مثال

Excuse me, how do I get to the library?

— Go straight on, take the second left, and it's on your right, opposite the school. It's about five minutes.

وقتی بار اول درست نشنیدید

A: Excuse me, which way is the station?

B: Go past the post office, then follow the road round to the left.

A: Sorry, could you say that again? Past the post office, and then?

B: Then left. Keep going and you'll see it on your right. You can't miss it.

Sorry, could you say that again? را آماده نگه دارید: راه را معمولاً سریع‌تر از آنچه بشود پردازشش کرد توضیح می‌دهند.
