O imperativo
O sujeito desaparece e fica só o verbo puro.
- Turn left at the lights.
- Go straight on.
- Don't take the first exit. (negação: don't + verbo)
Nem you, nem to. Essa é toda a forma.
A mesma forma cumpre outras quatro funções
| Onde | Exemplo |
|---|---|
| receitas e instruções | Add the eggs. Stir for two minutes. |
| placas e avisos | Keep left. Do not lean on the door. |
| avisos de perigo | Watch your step! · Mind the gap. |
| ofertas e convites | Have another biscuit. · Come in! |
Se a frase inclui você mesmo, é preciso usar let's: Let's take the bus. A negação é Let's not walk — it's raining.
Palavras de direção
| Expressão | Significado |
|---|---|
| go straight on / ahead | seguir em frente, sem desviar |
| turn left / right | virar à esquerda / à direita |
| take the second right | pegar a segunda à direita |
| go past the bank | passar em frente ao banco |
| go through the park | atravessar o parque de um lado ao outro |
| go over / under the bridge | pela ponte / por baixo da ponte |
| go along / follow this road | seguir pela mesma rua |
| it's on your left | fica à sua esquerda |
| opposite the station | em frente à estação, do outro lado da rua |
| next to / between | ao lado de / entre |
| at the corner | na esquina |
| at the end of the road | no final da rua |
| at the roundabout / crossroads | na rotatória / no cruzamento |
Como ordenar os passos
Explicar o caminho é uma sequência, e o inglês a diz em voz alta: first, then, after that, when you get to…, finally.
- First go straight on. Then take the second left. When you get to the church, turn right.
Como dizer se fica longe
- It's about two hundred metres.
- It's a five-minute walk. (antes do substantivo, minute fica no singular)
- It's just around the corner. · It's a fair way — you're better off taking the bus.
- You can't miss it. ("não tem como errar", uma frase final muito comum)
Como perguntar
- Excuse me, how do I get to the station?
- Is there a pharmacy near here?
- Which way is the museum?
- Is it far? — About ten minutes on foot.
Comece com Excuse me. Sem isso, a pergunta soa rude.
Como suavizar uma indicação
Para explicar o caminho, o imperativo puro é normal, mas quando você pede que alguém faça algo, ele pode soar como uma ordem. Escolha o nível que você precisa:
| Direto | Educado | Muito educado |
|---|---|---|
| Turn left here. | Could you turn left here, please? | Would you mind turning left here? |
| Send it today. | Please send it today. | Would you be able to send it today? |
Just também suaviza: Just go straight on.
Análise de um exemplo
Excuse me, how do I get to the library?
— Go straight on, take the second left, and it's on your right, opposite the school. It's about five minutes.
Quatro indicações e um ponto de referência. É o conjunto completo.
Quando você não entendeu da primeira vez
A: Excuse me, which way is the station?
B: Go past the post office, then follow the road round to the left.
A: Sorry, could you say that again? Past the post office, and then?
B: Then left. Keep going and you'll see it on your right. You can't miss it.
Vale a pena ter à mão Sorry, could you say that again?: normalmente explicam o caminho mais rápido do que se consegue processar.
