Correto Erro frequente
depend on depend of
listen to listen sem preposição
wait for wait sem preposição
arrive at (lugar) / in (cidade) arrive to
look for (procurar) search sem preposição
ask for (pedir) ask sem preposição
belong to belong of
apologise for apologise about
succeed in succeed to
complain about complain on
consist of consist from
pay for pay sem preposição

Repare nos verbos que em inglês não precisam de preposição, embora em português precisem:

  • ✅ I'll phone you. (nunca «phone to you»)
  • ✅ Let's discuss the budget. (nunca «discuss about»)
  • ✅ She entered the room. (nunca «entered in»)
  • ✅ I married him. (nunca «married with»)
  • ✅ It affects the result. (nunca «affects on»)

Adjetivo + preposição

  • interested in, good at, afraid of, proud of
  • responsible for, similar to, different from
  • worried about, keen on, aware of, capable of
  • married to, famous for, dependent on

She's good at maths and interested in physics.

Substantivo + preposição

Os substantivos também têm a sua preposição fixa, e no texto escrito aparecem constantemente.

Substantivo Preposição Exemplo
reason for the reason for the delay
solution to a solution to the problem
increase / decrease in an increase in prices
effect / impact on the effect on sales
difference between the difference between them
interest in an interest in history
advantage of the advantage of waiting

Tempo: in, on, at

Preposição Para que serve Exemplo
at hora exata, noite at 6pm, at night
on dias e datas on Monday, on 5 May
in meses, anos, períodos longos in July, in 2026, in the morning

Uma exceção que vale a pena memorizar: at night, mas in the morning / afternoon / evening.

Pares que se confundem

  • for + duração / during + evento: for two hours · during the meeting
  • by — não mais tarde que / until — até o momento: Finish it by Friday (prazo) · Wait until Friday (todo o tempo anterior)
  • since + ponto de partida / from … to para um intervalo: since 2016 · from nine to five
  • in + um período futuro: I'll be back in ten minutes. (nunca «after ten minutes»)

Lugar: in, on, at

  • in — dentro de algo: in the box, in London
  • on — sobre uma superfície: on the table, on the wall
  • at — em um ponto ou em um evento: at the bus stop, at the meeting

I'll meet you at the station, on platform 3, in the waiting room.

Movimento e posição

O movimento normalmente exige to, into ou onto; a posição exige in, at ou on.

  • I went to the office. / I was at the office.
  • She walked into the room. / She was in the room.

Dois verbos fogem da norma: arrive leva at/in e nunca to, e get leva to — I arrived at the airport · I got to the airport.

Transporte

by — para o meio em geral, on / in — para o veículo concreto:

  • by car, by train, by bus, by plane — mas on the train, in the car e on foot (nunca «by foot»).

A: What time do you arrive in London?

B: At half past six, if the train's on time. I'll wait for you at the barrier.

A: I might be late — it depends on the traffic.

B: No problem. I'll be there until seven anyway.

Arrive in com a cidade, at com a hora exata, wait for com a pessoa, depend on com a circunstância, until com todo o intervalo — cinco combinações distintas em quatro falas.
