  • Well, ... / I mean, ... / Actually, ...
  • That's a good question — let me think.
  • How can I put this...
  • It's difficult to say, but...

  • The thing is — well, what I'm really getting at is...
  • Or rather, ...
  • Let me rephrase that.
  • Sorry, that came out wrong.

  • There are two things going on here.
  • I'd separate that into a practical issue and a principled one.
  • Let me take those in turn.

  • I'd tentatively say...
  • My instinct is that...
  • I'm inclined to think...
  • Off the top of my head, ...

  • ...sort of a compatibility issue. · It was kind of deliberate.
  • ...caching, indexing, that kind of thing.
  • We had about twenty, give or take.
  • ...or something along those lines.

  • the thing you use to... · it's like a ... but for ...
  • I've forgotten the word — the one that means...
  • what's it called — the ... you know, the metal one

We decided — well, I decided, really — to postpone it.

  • Sorry, can I just finish that thought?
  • Just to add to that briefly...
  • I'll come back to that in a second.

  • ✅ The main issue, I think, [停顿] is that nobody owns the data.
  • 🚫 The main [停顿] issue is that nobody owns the [停顿] data.

流利的表达靠的是现成的多词组块(the thing is、to be fair、that said、off the top of my head),这样才能把注意力留给真正的想法本身。

Interviewer: Why did the migration take eighteen months?

Candidate: That's a fair question. Two things, really. The first was technical — we had, sort of, three generations of schema running at once. The second — well, what I'm getting at is that nobody owned the data. Or rather, everybody did, which amounts to the same thing. Off the top of my head, I'd say the second cost us more time than the first.
