There is y There are: cómo decir que algo existe
Cómo decir en inglés que algo existe y dónde exactamente — una construcción que no tiene un equivalente directo en español.
Para decir que algo existe, el inglés usa una construcción fija: there is o there are. Aquí la palabra there no significa "allí". Es solo una parte de la estructura.
Singular y plural
- There is + un objeto: There is a bank on this street.
- There are + más de uno: There are two banks on this street.
El verbo concuerda con lo que va después de él, no con there.
Los sustantivos incontables llevan is
Agua, pan, dinero, tiempo, información y música no se cuentan por unidades, así que siempre llevan is:
- There is milk in the fridge.
- There is a lot of traffic today.
Preguntas y negaciones

- Is there a pharmacy near here? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.

En preguntas y negaciones se usa any, y en afirmaciones some: There are some chairs.
Para preguntar por la cantidad, ponga delante how many / how much:
- How many people are there in your team?
- How much time is there before the train?
Pasado
- There was a mistake in the bill.
- There were three people waiting.
Con un verbo modal
La construcción acepta will, might, should, used to sin cambiar de forma — el verbo sigue siendo be.
- There will be a break at eleven.
- There might be a delay.
- There used to be a cinema here.
En el habla: there's
There's es muy frecuente y se contrae libremente. En cambio there're prácticamente no se usa — se dice there are completo.
- ✅ There's someone at the door.
- ✅ There are two people at the door. (no "there're")
Errores frecuentes
En muchos idiomas aquí se usa el verbo "tener" o "haber". En inglés, no.
❌ Here have a supermarket. ✅ There is a supermarket here.
❌ It is three rooms in the flat. ✅ There are three rooms in the flat.
There is o it is — there is introduce algo por primera vez, it is habla de algo ya conocido. There's a letter for you. It's from the bank.
Y al enumerar, el verbo concuerda con el primer elemento:
✅ There is a table and four chairs. ✅ There are four chairs and a table.
Dónde hace falta
Así es exactamente como se describe una habitación, una ciudad, una fotografía o un problema, por eso la construcción aparece constantemente tanto en los exámenes como en la conversación cotidiana.

Visitando un piso
A: Is there a washing machine?
B: There is, yes. And there's a dishwasher, though there isn't much cupboard space.
A: How many bedrooms are there?
