Preposiciones que confunden

Combinaciones con preposiciones que no se traducen literalmente — depend on, arrive at, interested in y otras.

Correcto Error frecuente
depend on depend of
listen to listen sin preposición
wait for wait sin preposición
arrive at (lugar) / in (ciudad) arrive to
look for (buscar) search sin preposición
ask for (pedir) ask sin preposición
belong to belong of
apologise for apologise about
succeed in succeed to
complain about complain on
consist of consist from
pay for pay sin preposición

Fíjese en los verbos que en inglés no necesitan preposición, aunque en español sí:

  • ✅ I'll phone you. (nunca «phone to you»)
  • ✅ Let's discuss the budget. (nunca «discuss about»)
  • ✅ She entered the room. (nunca «entered in»)
  • ✅ I married him. (nunca «married with»)
  • ✅ It affects the result. (nunca «affects on»)

Adjetivo + preposición

  • interested in, good at, afraid of, proud of
  • responsible for, similar to, different from
  • worried about, keen on, aware of, capable of
  • married to, famous for, dependent on

She's good at maths and interested in physics.

Sustantivo + preposición

Los sustantivos también tienen su preposición fija, y en el texto escrito aparecen constantemente.

Sustantivo Preposición Ejemplo
reason for the reason for the delay
solution to a solution to the problem
increase / decrease in an increase in prices
effect / impact on the effect on sales
difference between the difference between them
interest in an interest in history
advantage of the advantage of waiting

Tiempo: in, on, at

Preposición Para qué Ejemplo
at hora exacta, noche at 6pm, at night
on días y fechas on Monday, on 5 May
in meses, años, periodos largos in July, in 2026, in the morning

Una excepción que conviene memorizar: at night, pero in the morning / afternoon / evening.

Pares que se confunden

  • for + duración / during + evento: for two hours · during the meeting
  • by — no más tarde de / until — hasta el momento: Finish it by Friday (plazo) · Wait until Friday (todo el tiempo previo)
  • since + punto de partida / from … to para un intervalo: since 2016 · from nine to five
  • in + un periodo futuro: I'll be back in ten minutes. (nunca «after ten minutes»)

Lugar: in, on, at

  • in — dentro de algo: in the box, in London
  • on — sobre una superficie: on the table, on the wall
  • at — en un punto o en un evento: at the bus stop, at the meeting

I'll meet you at the station, on platform 3, in the waiting room.

Movimiento y posición

El movimiento normalmente requiere to, into u onto; la posición requiere in, at u on.

  • I went to the office. / I was at the office.
  • She walked into the room. / She was in the room.

Dos verbos se salen de la norma: arrive lleva at/in y nunca to, y get lleva to — I arrived at the airport · I got to the airport.

Transporte

by — para el medio en general, on / in — para el vehículo concreto:

  • by car, by train, by bus, by plane — pero on the train, in the car y on foot (nunca «by foot»).

A: What time do you arrive in London?

B: At half past six, if the train's on time. I'll wait for you at the barrier.

A: I might be late — it depends on the traffic.

B: No problem. I'll be there until seven anyway.

Arrive in con la ciudad, at con la hora exacta, wait for con la persona, depend on con la circunstancia, until con todo el intervalo — cinco combinaciones distintas en cuatro intervenciones.
