Asking for Help Politely in English
Simple, polite phrases for asking questions, requesting help, and checking you understood — without sounding rude.
English politeness relies less on special words than on sentence shape. A direct command sounds rude; a question sounds polite. Learn a few patterns and you will always sound friendly.
The magic pattern: Could you...?
- Could you help me, please?
- Could you repeat that, please?
- Could you speak more slowly, please?
Could you is polite in every situation — with strangers, teachers, or colleagues.
Asking for things
- Can I have a coffee, please?
- Could I have the bill, please? (a little more polite)
Compare:
- ❌ Give me a coffee. (sounds like an order)
- ✅ Can I have a coffee, please?
Getting someone's attention
- Excuse me, ... — before asking a stranger anything.
- Sorry, ... — when you interrupt or need to pass.
Excuse me, where is the station?
When you don't understand
Never pretend. These phrases are completely normal and polite:
- Sorry, I don't understand.
- Could you repeat that, please?
- Could you say that again, more slowly?
- How do you spell that?
- What does "delayed" mean?
Saying thank you
- Thank you. / Thanks.
- Thanks a lot. / Thank you very much.
And the reply: You're welcome. or simply No problem.
