This Privacy Policy explains what information English.Guru collects and how it is used.
Locally stored data: your quiz progress, reading history, language preference, and learning plan inputs are stored in your browser and stay on your device. Taking the level test and getting a plan does not require sending any of it to us.
Your progress page: the first time you finish something — read a lesson, complete a quiz, or take the level test — your browser generates a random identifier and stores it alongside that record. It exists so this device can show you your own progress page listing what you have read, how your quizzes went, and your level-test result. It is not an account and is not linked to your name or email; we do not use it to track you across other sites, and it is not sent to us. Clearing your browsing data removes it, along with the progress it names.
Voluntarily provided data: if you express interest in paid support or tutoring options, we ask for your email address.
Anonymized learning data: separately from any saved plan, we may store level-test results and quiz scores in an anonymous, aggregated form — not linked to your identity — to understand overall learning outcomes and improve our content, our learning plans, and the accuracy of the level test itself.
Email addresses submitted through interest forms are used solely to contact you about the service you expressed interest in. We do not sell your personal information.
The Service uses browser local storage to remember your preferences, your progress, and the random identifier described above. This data stays on your device unless you clear it.
We use a third-party analytics service to understand how the Service is used. This includes click and link tracking, accurate bounce-rate measurement, and session recording, which captures how visitors interact with pages — clicks, scrolling, and cursor movement — to help us improve the Service. This analytics service may set cookies and similar technologies and may process data outside your country of residence. We may also display third-party advertising on some parts of the Service, which may use cookies and similar technologies to select and measure ads.
Locally stored data remains on your device until you clear your browser storage. Data you voluntarily submit, such as an email address, is retained until you request its deletion. Account data is kept until you delete your account (see section 10); your club memberships and join requests are removed when you leave a club or delete your account.
You may request access to, or deletion of, any personal data you have provided by contacting us. You can also delete your account yourself at any time (see section 10).
The Service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the date above.
Accounts are optional: reading lessons, taking quizzes and getting a plan never require one. An account is for joining clubs and taking part in them, and you must be 16 or older to create one.
What an account stores: your email address; a password, kept only as a one-way hash that cannot be read back; a nickname; the language of the page you registered on; the time you confirmed you are 16 or older (and, later, that you are 18 or older for in-person events); whether you want email notifications; the time you were last seen, updated at most once a day; and your sign-in sessions. We do not ask for your real name or date of birth.
Your nickname is public: other members will see it. Choose one that does not reveal who you are unless you want it to.
Email: we use your address to send you account messages — a confirmation link and, if you ask, a password-reset link — which are always sent. Notifications about clubs are sent only while the “Receive email notifications” box is ticked; you can untick it on your profile page, and every notification has a one-click unsubscribe link. Messages are delivered through an email delivery service acting on our behalf.
Google sign-in: if you choose it, Google tells us your Google account’s identifier and an email address it has verified. We do not receive your Google password and we use nothing else from your Google account. The Google button loads a script from Google on the account pages, and Google may set its own cookies there under its own policy.
The sign-in cookie: when you sign in, our server sets a cookie named eg_session. It is strictly necessary for staying signed in, it can be read only by our server (not by the pages of this site or by scripts), it is sent only to api.english.guru, and it ends when you sign out or after 30 days.
Deleting your account: you can delete it at any time on the account page by entering your password, or by confirming with Google if you have no password. We then remove your email address, password, sign-in methods and sessions, and keep a record that holds only your nickname — it stays reserved, together with any earlier nickname, so nobody can pose as you. You choose what happens to anything you posted: it can stay, shown as “deleted member”, or be deleted. Backups may keep deleted data until their retention period ends.
Restrictions: we may suspend an account that breaks the rules of a club or of the site, and we keep a record of the suspension.
Clubs: if you apply to create a club, join one or manage one, we store which clubs you belong to and your role in each, and your join requests. For a club you apply to create, we store the text you wrote — name, description, theme, who can join, and the city you chose or the city name you typed if yours was not listed — and the site’s administrator reads it to decide. A club belongs to one language version of the site.
What other people see: a club’s page is public. It shows the club’s name, description, theme, city and level, the number of members, and the nicknames of its managers. The list of members is visible to the club’s members, or only to its managers if the club chose so. A private club’s content is visible only to its members. A club’s managers can see your nickname and your join request, and can remove you from the club or ban you from it.
Events: when you sign up for a club’s event we store the sign-up, and for an in-person event the moment you confirmed that you are 18 or older. The exact address and the meeting link of an event are shown only to the members who signed up and to the club’s managers, who also see the nicknames of those who signed up. Your personal calendar feed is a secret web address made for your account: anyone who has it can read the events you signed up for, with their addresses and links, so keep it private. The city you pick in “Clubs for your plan” stays in your browser; it is sent only to filter the list and is not stored on our servers.
Discussion: a post, a comment or a reaction you write in a club is stored with your nickname and the time. In a public club, posts and comments are public: anyone can read them without an account, and search engines can index them and keep copies we cannot recall. In a private club only its members can see them. When you report something we store your reason and that you made the report; the site’s administrator reads it, and the author is not told who reported. When you delete your account you choose whether your posts and comments stay under the name “deleted member” or are deleted (a post that has replies stays as a marked row with its text removed); your reactions are deleted either way.
Notifications and roles: we send two kinds of notification email, only while the box in your profile is ticked: a warning to the managers of a club that has been quiet for a long time, and a warning to a moderator or a site-run club manager who has been inactive. Every one of them carries a link that turns the box off without signing in. To measure inactivity we store the date you last signed in, updated at most once a day. If you apply for a position we store what you wrote and the administrator reads it; the result is shown in your profile. The administrator also keeps a record of who was given, warned about and lost a role.
