As roupas e as compras

Como se chama o que você está vestindo, e as frases que guiam você por uma loja de roupas: tamanhos, provador e devoluções.

O vocabulário de roupas, mais algumas frases de loja, cobrem uma das situações reais mais frequentes.

As roupas

Em cima: shirt, T-shirt, blouse, jumper (nos EUA: sweater), jacket, coat Embaixo: trousers (nos EUA: pants), jeans, shorts, skirt, dress Calçados: shoes, boots, trainers (nos EUA: sneakers), socks Acessórios: hat, scarf, gloves, belt, tie, bag

Atenção: no inglês britânico, pants significa roupa íntima, e no inglês americano, calças. O contexto costuma resolver a situação, mas vale a pena saber disso.

Ambos são entendidos em todos os lugares; escolha o conjunto de um único país e mantenha-o.

Sempre no plural

Trousers, jeans, shorts, glasses, tights não têm singular. Use a pair of:

I bought a pair of jeans. (não a jean)

These trousers are too big. (não is)

Wear, put on, try on, fit, suit

Estes cinco verbos não são intercambiáveis:

  • wear — estar vestindo: She's wearing a blue coat.
  • put on — vestir, colocar: Put on your shoes.
  • try on — experimentar na loja: Can I try this on?
  • fit — servir no tamanho: It doesn't fit — it's too small.
  • suit — cair bem, favorecer: That colour really suits you.

Fit fala do tamanho, suit fala da aparência. Confundi-los é um erro clássico.

Mais dois úteis: go with (combina com outra peça) — Those shoes go with your jacket — e dress up / dress down (se vestir de forma mais elegante ou mais informal).

Tamanhos e materiais

  • small, medium, large — nas etiquetas, S, M, L
  • What size are you? — I'm a medium. · I take a 40.
  • Os tamanhos de roupas e calçados variam conforme o país: Is that UK or European sizing?
  • Materiais: cotton, wool, leather, denim, silk — a cotton shirt, leather boots

Na loja

  • I'm just looking, thanks. (quando o vendedor se aproxima)
  • Do you have this in a medium?
  • Have you got these in a size 40?
  • Where are the fitting rooms?
  • Can I try this on?
  • It's too tight / too loose / too long.
  • Do you have a bigger one?
  • I'll take it.
  • Can I pay by card?

Preços e descontos

  • Is this on sale? · It's reduced. · It's half price.
  • That's a bargain. (um preço muito bom) · That's a rip-off. (um roubo)
  • It's 20% off. · Is there a discount?

Devoluções

  • I'd like to return this, please.
  • It doesn't fit. / It's faulty.
  • Do you have the receipt?
  • Can I get a refund or an exchange?

Refund é ter o dinheiro devolvido. Exchange é outro produto em troca.

A frase «I'm just looking, thanks» é a primeira que vale a pena aprender.

A: Can I help you at all?

B: I'm just looking, thanks. Actually — have you got this in a large?

A: I'll check. The fitting rooms are just over there.

B: Thanks. Hmm — it fits, but I'm not sure it suits me.

A: It's reduced, if that helps. And you can return it within 30 days with the receipt.

Recusar ajuda, perguntar o tamanho, fit versus suit e as condições de devolução: tudo em uma única visita à loja.
