Question tags: ..., isn't it?
A regra básica: sinal contrário
Frase afirmativa → tag negativa. Frase negativa → tag afirmativa.
It's cold today, isn't it?
It isn't cold today, is it?
You've finished, haven't you?
You haven't finished, have you?
Qual verbo auxiliar usar?
Repita o verbo auxiliar da frase. Se não houver nenhum, use do / does / did.
| Frase | Tag |
|---|---|
| She is ready | isn't she? |
| They have left | haven't they? |
| He can swim | can't he? |
| You like it | don't you? |
| She works here | doesn't she? |
| They went home | didn't they? |
| You must go | mustn't you? |
| We used to live there | didn't we? |
| You'd better ask | hadn't you? |
Com a construção there is / there are, a tag mantém there, como se fosse o sujeito:
- There's a problem, isn't there?
- There weren't many people, were there?
Exceções que vale a pena memorizar
- I am late, aren't I? (não amn't I)
- Let's go, shall we?
- Open the window, will you? (depois de um imperativo)
- Nobody called, did they? (palavras como nobody, no one, someone levam they)
- Nothing happened, did it?
Cuidado com a negação escondida. As palavras never, hardly, rarely, nobody já tornam a frase negativa, então a tag fica afirmativa:
He never calls, does he?
- So you're the new manager, are you?
- You think that's funny, do you?
- You haven't eaten, have you? — No, I haven't. (correto: não comi)
- You haven't eaten, have you? — Yes, I have. (correto: sim, comi)
A entonação muda o significado
Lovely day, isn't it? ↘ (small talk — simplesmente concorde)
You locked the door, didn't you?
That's expensive é um veredito; That's expensive, isn't it? é um convite para concordar.
Cada tag no seu papel
A: Long queue, isn't it? ↘
B: Awful. You've been waiting a while, haven't you? ↗
A: Half an hour. They don't open the second desk, do they.
B: Never. So you come here often, do you?
