¿by, on o in?
I go to work by bus / by train / by car / by bike / by plane.
Excepción: on foot (no by foot).
on / in + un medio de transporte concreto:
I'm on the bus. · She's on the train. (ahí se puede caminar)
He's in the car. · We're in a taxi. (ahí uno va sentado dentro)
Regla aproximada: el transporte público grande lleva on, el transporte privado pequeño lleva in.
Subir y bajar
La preposición se mantiene:
get on / get off the bus, the train, the plane
get in / get out of the car, the taxi
Catch, miss y take
- catch — llegar a tiempo: I need to catch the 8:15.
- miss — perderlo: I missed the last bus.
- take — usarlo como medio: We took a taxi.
- board — palabra formal de los avisos: Flight BA219 is now boarding.
Vocabulario
Tren: platform, ticket, single, return, timetable, change (at), delay, carriage, season ticket Carretera: bus stop, coach (autobús interurbano), traffic, rush hour, petrol (en EE. UU.: gas), motorway, fare Avión: gate, boarding pass, check-in, luggage, hand luggage, departures, arrivals, delayed, cancelled
- A single to York, please. (solo ida)
- A return, please. (ida y vuelta)
- What time's the next train?
- Which platform is it?
- Do I have to change? — Yes, change at Reading.
|---|---|
| The train now standing at platform 4…
| …is due to depart at 14:30. | salida según el horario |
| We apologise for the delay to this service. | el tren va con retraso |
| A replacement bus service is in operation. | no hay tren, circula un autobús |
También son frecuentes: terminates at (no sigue más allá), calling at (con paradas en), alight (bajarse).
El taxi
- Could you take me to this address?
- How much will it cost?
- Can you drop me here?
- Keep the change.
Problemas
- The train is delayed by twenty minutes.
- The flight has been cancelled.
- I've missed my connection.
- Is there a later one?
- Excuse me, is this the right platform for Leeds?
- Sorry, I think I'm on the wrong train.
- What should I do — my connection's been cancelled.
A: Excuse me — is the 8:15 to Leeds still running?
B: It's been cancelled, I'm afraid. There's a replacement bus from stand C.
A: Do I have to change?
B: Yes, change at Doncaster. Your ticket's still valid.
