There is et There are : comment dire que quelque chose existe
Pour dire que quelque chose existe, l’anglais emploie une construction fixe : there is ou there are.
- There is + un objet : There is a bank on this street.
- There are + plus d’un : There are two banks on this street.
Les noms indénombrables prennent is
- There is milk in the fridge.
- There is a lot of traffic today.
Questions et négations
| Singulier | Pluriel | |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Is there a…? | Are there any…? |
| Négation | There isn't a… | There aren't any… |
- Is there a pharmacy near here? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
- Are there any tickets left? — No, there aren't.
Dans les questions et les négations, on emploie any, et dans les affirmations some : There are some chairs.
Pour demander la quantité, placez devant how many / how much :
- How many people are there in your team?
- How much time is there before the train?
Le passé
- There was a mistake in the bill.
- There were three people waiting.
Avec un verbe modal
La construction accepte will, might, should, used to sans changer de forme — le verbe reste be.
- There will be a break at eleven.
- There might be a delay.
- There used to be a cinema here.
À l’oral : there's
- ✅ There's someone at the door.
- ✅ There are two people at the door. (pas « there're »)
Erreurs fréquentes
Le français « il y a » est littéralement « il y a » (it has there) : de là vient le calque avec has ou have. En anglais, ce n’est pas possible.
❌ It has a supermarket here. ✅ There is a supermarket here.
❌ It is three rooms in the flat. ✅ There are three rooms in the flat.
Attention aussi : « il y a trois jours » ne se dit pas avec there is, mais three days ago.
There is ou it is — there is introduit quelque chose pour la première fois, it is parle de quelque chose de déjà connu. There's a letter for you. It's from the bank.
✅ There is a table and four chairs. ✅ There are four chairs and a table.
There is a small kitchen, and there are two windows. There isn't a lift, but there is a garden.
Visiter un appartement
A: Is there a washing machine?
B: There is, yes. And there's a dishwasher, though there isn't much cupboard space.
A: How many bedrooms are there?
B: Two. There used to be three, but the last owner knocked a wall through.
