There is e There are: como dizer que algo existe

Para dizer que algo existe, o inglês usa uma construção fixa: there is ou there are. Aqui a palavra there não significa "ali". É apenas uma parte da estrutura.

Singular e plural

  • There is + um objeto: There is a bank on this street.
  • There are + mais de um: There are two banks on this street.

Os substantivos incontáveis levam is

  • There is milk in the fridge.
  • There is a lot of traffic today.

Perguntas e negações

Singular Plural
Pergunta Is there a…? Are there any…?
Negação There isn't a… There aren't any…
  • Is there a pharmacy near here? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
  • Are there any tickets left? — No, there aren't.

Em perguntas e negações usa-se any, e em afirmações some: There are some chairs.

Para perguntar pela quantidade, coloque antes how many / how much:

  • How many people are there in your team?
  • How much time is there before the train?

Passado

  • There was a mistake in the bill.
  • There were three people waiting.

Com um verbo modal

A construção aceita will, might, should, used to sem mudar de forma — o verbo continua sendo be.

  • There will be a break at eleven.
  • There might be a delay.
  • There used to be a cinema here.

Na fala: there's

  • ✅ There's someone at the door.
  • ✅ There are two people at the door. (não "there're")

Erros frequentes

❌ Here have a supermarket. ✅ There is a supermarket here.

❌ It is three rooms in the flat. ✅ There are three rooms in the flat.

There is ou it is — there is introduz algo pela primeira vez, it is fala de algo já conhecido. There's a letter for you. It's from the bank.

✅ There is a table and four chairs. ✅ There are four chairs and a table.

There is a small kitchen, and there are two windows. There isn't a lift, but there is a garden.

Visitando um apartamento

A: Is there a washing machine?

B: There is, yes. And there's a dishwasher, though there isn't much cupboard space.

A: How many bedrooms are there?

B: Two. There used to be three, but the last owner knocked a wall through.
