|---|---|
| depend on | depend of |
| listen to | listen sans préposition |
| wait for | wait sans préposition |
| arrive at (lieu) / in (ville) | arrive to |
| look for (chercher) | look sans préposition |
| ask for (demander) | ask sans préposition |
| belong to | belong of |
| apologise for | apologise about |
| succeed in | succeed to |
| complain about | complain on |
| consist of | consist from |
| pay for | pay sans préposition |
- ✅ I'll phone you. (jamais « phone to you » ; en français, « téléphoner à quelqu’un »)
- ✅ Let's discuss the budget. (jamais « discuss about » ; « discuter de »)
- ✅ She entered the room. (jamais « entered in » ; « entrer dans »)
- ✅ I married him. (jamais « married with » ; « se marier avec »)
- ✅ It affects the result. (jamais « affects on »)
Adjectif + préposition
- interested in, good at, afraid of, proud of
- responsible for, similar to, different from
- worried about, keen on, aware of, capable of
- married to, famous for, dependent on
She's good at maths and interested in physics.
|---|---|---|
| reason | for | the reason for the delay |
| solution | to | a solution to the problem |
| increase / decrease | in | an increase in prices |
| effect / impact | on | the effect on sales |
| difference | between | the difference between them |
| interest | in | an interest in history |
| advantage | of | the advantage of waiting |
Temps : in, on, at
| Préposition | Pour quoi | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| at | heure exacte, nuit | at 6pm, at night |
| on | jours et dates | on Monday, on 5 May |
| in | mois, années, longues périodes | in July, in 2026, in the morning |
Une exception à mémoriser : at night, mais in the morning / afternoon / evening.
Paires qui se confondent
- for + durée / during + événement : for two hours · during the meeting
- by — pas plus tard que / until — jusqu’à ce moment : Finish it by Friday (échéance) · Wait until Friday (tout le temps d’ici là)
- since + point de départ / from … to pour un intervalle : since 2016 · from nine to five
- in + une période future : I'll be back in ten minutes.
Lieu : in, on, at
- in — à l’intérieur de quelque chose : in the box, in London
- on — sur une surface : on the table, on the wall
- at — en un point ou à un événement : at the bus stop, at the meeting
I'll meet you at the station, on platform 3, in the waiting room.
Mouvement et position
Le mouvement exige normalement to, into ou onto ; la position exige in, at ou on.
- I went to the office. / I was at the office.
- She walked into the room. / She was in the room.
Deux verbes sortent de la norme : arrive prend at/in et jamais to, et get prend to — I arrived at the airport · I got to the airport.
Transport
by — pour le moyen en général, on / in — pour le véhicule précis :
- by car, by train, by bus, by plane — mais on the train, in the car et on foot (jamais « by foot » : « à pied » se dit on foot).
A : What time do you arrive in London?
B : At half past six, if the train's on time. I'll wait for you at the barrier.
A : I might be late — it depends on the traffic.
B : No problem. I'll be there until seven anyway.
Arrive in avec la ville, at avec l’heure exacte, wait for avec la personne, depend on avec la circonstance, until avec tout l’intervalle — cinq combinaisons différentes en quatre répliques.
