English speaking games — free online practice

Free English speaking games you play online in your browser. Hold a whole conversation in English against a three-minute clock and say the right thing at the right moment.

Most English learning games ask you to match a word to a picture. These do not. Each one drops you into a real situation — a corner shop about to close, a boarding gate about to shut — and gives you three minutes and a person to talk to. Everything that person says is in English, and so is everything you say back. Of the three replies on offer only one answers what was actually asked; the other two are perfectly good English sentences that simply do not belong to that moment. That is the whole point. Knowing a phrase and knowing when to say it are different skills, and it is the second one that decides whether a conversation goes well. Free, straight in the browser, nothing to install.

How these games work

  1. Pick a game and press start. The clock starts with it — three minutes, drawn as a strip across the top of the screen.
  2. The other person speaks first, in English. Three things you could say back appear above your head; tap one, or press 1, 2 or 3.
  3. Only one of them answers the question. The rest are correct English used at the wrong moment, and each wrong pick costs you five seconds.
  4. Finish the conversation before the strip runs out and you win. Nothing is saved, nothing is graded, and you can replay as often as you like.

Common questions

Are these English games really free?
Yes. Every game on this page is free, runs in the browser, and needs no download and no sign-up. Open it and press start.
Is this really speaking practice?
You choose the reply rather than say it out loud, so this is conversation practice rather than pronunciation practice. What it does train is the part most learners actually get stuck on: picking the right English phrase quickly while someone is waiting for an answer. Read your chosen reply out loud and you get the speaking practice too.
What level of English do I need?
A1–A2, that is, beginner. The dialogue is written at that level and the rules before each game appear in your own language, so you can start from scratch. Higher-level learners will finish with time to spare.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. Every game is built for a phone screen first and works the same on a tablet or a laptop. There is no app to install.
How long does one game take?
Three minutes at most — that is the length of the clock. A first attempt, reading the rules included, fits inside five minutes, so a game slots easily into a break.
